Intro: Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp. began test-marketing a new smokeless tobacco product this week, even though the company plans to close its Macon plant in a couple of years after its merger with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco.
"We've said from the very beginning, we'll continue to operate as a competitive company, because we are," said Fred McConnell, manager of communications and public affairs at B&W's Macon plant.

Interval, similar to other brands sold by other tobacco companies, is available at about 12 cigarette stores in Louisville. It dissolves completely in the user's mouth.
B&W worked with Virginia-based Star Scientific Inc. in developing Interval.
