LETTERS: Proposed Smoking Ban

Intro:

  • As a business leader and restaurateur in this community, I have a vested interest in Louisville's future. That interest not only includes the city's economic future, but also the health and well-being of its residents. . . .

Many business owners in our local hospitality industry believe a smoking ban will harm their businesses. They have the right, and should have the right, to operate their businesses as they see fit. The best businesses are those that listen to their clientele and cater to their needs.

The debate on this issue has been a healthy process. I applaud the courageous positions on this issue taken recently by Mayor Jerry Abramson and Greater Louisville, Inc.

  • I was bitterly disappointed to read that Mayor Jerry Abramson does not plan to support the smoking ban. He says he is convinced that secondhand smoke is harmful, which makes his refusal to effectively prevent it in public places either foolish or a cowardly refusal to take on the business community. This decision, if not reversed, will cost lives.

  • I'm appalled that our Mayor thinks a compromise is in order regarding the proposed smoking ban when statistics prove that a compromise is unacceptable . . .

From now on when I'm asked if I have a smoking preference, I will answer, "Yes. I want it banned."

Nonsmokers have a right to be heard. We have the right to breathe smoke-free air.
