Chronic lung diseases caused by smoking, such as emphysema, may now be one of the leading causes of death and disability in New Zealand, a new report warns.

The Asthma and Respiratory Foundation of New Zealand report urges health officials to make chronic emphysema and bronchitis, known collectively as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a health priority.
