Intro: For Judy Brownell of Gainesville, the Great American Smokeout provided just the nudge she needed to break through the tobacco barrier.
"I was a smoker for 19 years and had tried everything to quit," she said. "Each year I saw (news about) the Great American Smokeout, and it stayed on my mind. Ten years ago, I finally went to the doctor and got the nicotine patch, and I decided to start using it on that November day."
Brownell calls the decision "the best thing I ever did for myself and my family. I was really afraid I would get emphysema and die. I already had allergy and sinus problems, and I knew what (smoking) was doing to me.
