Smoking ban letters

Jump to full article: Lincoln (NE) Journal Star, 2003-11-09

Intro:

  • The fact of the matter is that a no-smoking sign outside a bar also means going out of business. But since when did the Lincoln City Council care about businesses in this city? Look at the businesses they already have chased away.

  • The entire state of California is smoke-free and it has not affected its businesses. It is also smoke-free in Boulder, Colo. We have visited these places numerous times and have not heard all the complaining that is heard here.

  • If people don't want to go to bars that allow smoking, there are a few that don't allow it. Go to them. Maybe we should have someone standing at the door handing out paper masks that cover the nose and mouth. Employees could wear these also.

  • After reading Craig Loeck's letter to the editor regarding smoking (LJS, Nov. 4), I had to admit that he had some good points. People losing weight and avoiding excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages would certainly lead to some relief for our health care system.

However, Loeck should do some research in relationship to priorities. According to the National Institutes of Health, an estimated 430,000 deaths annually are directly caused by cigarette smoking.

  • I am not asking smokers to stop smoking, I am asking them to respect the nonsmoker.

  • Just out of curiosity, if you succeed in enacting this ban, who will your next target be?

Note to City Council members: I will not vote to retain any of you who vote for this ban, and I do vote! I am not alone!
