Intro:

The University of Calgary students' union is sticking with its deal to carry a tobacco company's cigarettes exclusively but the curtain has come down on smokes-sponsored concerts on campus, the union's president said Friday.

"The promotional events are over," said Jayna Gilchrist. "It's over with."

"It's not worth the problems that could occur. It's one of those really difficult situations it's better not to deal with."

Gilchrist said the students' union has had the promotional deal for years. Gold Club Series, an arm of Rothmans, presented concerts and other events on campus.

But a recent concert was the last tobacco-sponsored event on campus because that part of the contract is over, she said. . . .

The students union at the University of Lethbridge also has a promotions deal with Rothmans. A similar arrangement exists at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton, the Herald learned Friday.

Students unions at SAIT and Mount Royal College do not have contracts with tobacco companies.
