Intro:

Use of tobacco - be it smoking or chewing, may not be a healthy habit but tobacco waste may soon be a goldmine. The extract components from tobacco wastes are high-value nutraceutical products, estimated to fetch about $1,000 per kg in the international markets.

A technology has been developed at the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), Hyderabad to manufacture nutraceuticals from tobacco wastes. As part of commercialisation of this technology, IICT has signed an agreement with Bangalore-based Sami Laboratories Pvt Ltd. . . .

Recognising the pharmaceutical industry's demand for the product, IICT is negotiating with the Central Tobacco Board, Guntur and Central Tobacco Research Institute (CTRI), Rajamundry for wider applications of its technology.
