Intro:

First Breath, a program aimed at helping pregnant women quit smoking, has been successful and will expand throughout the state, officials with the Wisconsin Women's Health Foundation announced today.

First Breath, a counseling-based pilot program, was developed to reduced smoking among low-income pregnant women. The program had a 43.8 percent quit rate compared to the 17.1 percent rate with a comparison group, from March 2001 to December 2002.

In Wisconsin, 15.8 percent of pregnant women reported smoking during pregnancy in 2001 compared with 12 percent of pregnant women in the nation, according to the Wisconsin Medical Journal. The tremendous health risks among smoking mothers encouraged the program's development, said Sue Ann Thompson, president of the Wisconsin Women's Health Foundation.
