Intro: The traditional image of healthy Norwegians has been smeared by new statistics that indicate that women here have moved past their sisters in neighboring Denmark, earning the dubious honor of heaviest female smokers in Europe.
An aggressive anti-smoking campaign by Danish health authorities beginning in 1995 has finally begun to pay off, with a clear decline in smokers there, particularly among women, who were European 'champions' in nicotine puffing. Now Norwegian and German women top the list.
According to numbers from 1999 and 2000 from the World Health Organization (WHO), Norway's women topped European statistics with a smoker percentile of 32.
