Sparks and smoke flew when council revisited the smoking bylaw Monday. But you still can't smoke on a patio in Calgary.

City council has voted down an opportunity to move Calgary's smoke-free status ahead four years, but agreed to a comprehensive review of the smoking bylaw.

In a topsy-turvy morning of debate Monday, aldermanic motions ranged from allowing smoking on restaurant and bar patios to reopening the bylaw.

While both of those options lost, council did agree to a motion by Diane Colley-Urquhart to review the status of the six-month-old smoking bylaw. A report is expected at the Sept. 22 council meeting.

Ald. Madeleine King, who started the debate with a motion to allow smoking on patios, said she was disappointed with the turn of events.
