TYBEE ISLAND -- Smokers who throw away their cigarette butts on the beaches of this popular Georgia island could face a $1,000 fine under a revised city ordinance.

The penalty is part of a new effort on Tybee Island to stamp out cigarette littering.

Organizers have also started using outdoor advertising, including three billboards that read "Some butts don't belong on the beach."
