Intro:

The family of a deceased smoker has sued the makers of the cigarettes she smoked and the law firm of Shook Hardy & Bacon.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Kansas City, Kan., by the heirs of Lorraine L. Brewer, names R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp; Altria Group Inc., formerly known as Philip Morris Cos. Inc.; Philip Morris USA; and Kansas City-based Shook, one of the foremost tobacco defense firms in the country. . .

Like those lawsuits, the Brewer action alleges that the industry concealed the health dangers of smoking and the addictive nature of nicotine. And like them, the Brewer lawsuit names Shook in connection with its decades-long work for the tobacco industry's research arm, the Council for Tobacco Research. . .

Pickett may have a particularly tough case on his hands. Brewer died of lung cancer on April 4, 2001, but she had lived to be 83.
