Intro: The evidence is clear that adult smokers, who ultimately pay these excessive taxes, are already carrying far more than a reasonable share of federal and state government revenue requirements.
If tough times call for additional revenue for programs that benefit all residents, new taxes should be equitably distributed -- not just paid by the 23.7 percent of adults who smoke in Georgia. -- Tommy J. Payne is executive vice president for external relations for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co.
