Rail operator bans smoking in first class on France's fastest trains

For the cigarette lovers of France, traveling second class is now the only way to go when it comes to smoking on the country's fastest trains.

The operator of the high-speed TGV network said it stopped providing first-class smoking cars on its trains starting Sunday, though travelers can still light up in some second-class cars.

Some may call it a healthier way to travel -- but it may also be smart business.

A study for the state-run rail operator SNCF published in October showed that 60 percent of smokers book their seats in the nonsmoking sections.

In addition, some nonsmoking patrons said they would rather change their travel plans or not take the train at all if the smoke-free cars were booked full, according to the study.
