Intro: Under the $24 billion California settlement with tobacco companies approved last week, half the money will go directly to the state, 40 percent to the state's 58 counties (based on population size) and 10 percent to the metropolitan cities of San Francisco, San Jose, San Diego and Los Angeles.
Annual Contra Costa payments would start at $3.7 million in 2000 and rise sharply to $12 million or so by 2025.
