Reynolds American Inc. reports its third-quarter results on Thursday. The following is a summary of key developments and analyst opinion related to the period.

OVERVIEW: The nation's second-biggest cigarette company offers such brands as Camel, Pall Mall and Natural American Spirit. It also owns Conwood Co., which makes Kodiak and Grizzly brand smokeless tobacco.

Reynolds, based in Winston-Salem, N.C., is looking to grow market share and aggressively promotes its brands. Flagship brand Camel held 7.5 percent of the cigarette market in the second quarter, in line with a year earlier. Pall Mall's share climbed 2.6 percentage points to 5.2 percent.

The company's second-quarter profit climbed 4 percent because it raised prices and cut costs as sales volumes slipped and a 62-cent-per-pack federal tax took hold.

Butler told the Marion City Council Monday that he had been approached about certain taverns which are allowing smoking.

"They are concerned about our enforcement of the no smoking ban," Butler said. He said one tavern in particular is apparently posting smoking hours at the business.

Public safety commissioner Jay Rix said the police department has been monitoring bars for such violations, but will step up efforts in light of the complaints.

The news comes as a woman was convicted of smoking in a vehicle containing a three-year-old child in what is believed to be one of the first prosecutions of its kind in Australia.

Britain was considering moves to introduce similar legislation next year as part of its review of 'smoke-free laws' introduced three years ago.

But a spokeswoman for the Department of Health told Sky this has now changed.

"The Government does not have any plans at this point in time to introduce legislation to prohibit smoking in private cars," she said.

Commissioners OK partial smoking ban

Jump to full article: Traverse City (MI) Record-Eagle, 2009-10-20
Author: Sheri McWhirter

Intro:

Traverse City commissioners banned smoking at beaches, picnic shelters and playground areas, but stopped short of a total smoking ban in city parks.

Commissioners decided in a 6-1 vote in favor of a smoking ban "in park buildings, shelters and designated swimming and beach areas in city parks that have waterfront or playground areas." The ban takes effect Oct. 29 and violators could be asked to stop smoking, expelled from the park or ticketed.

Commissioner Ralph Soffredine said it was a move in the right direction, but wanted a more restrictive measure to ban all tobacco in city parks.
