Beer and cigarette prices increase

Intro:

PRICES of cigarette and beer products in the country have now increased.

This follows an order issued by the Minister of Finance Snyder Rini last week to all the tobacco and beer importers and manufacturers.

Mr Rini had told parliament last month that government will cut goods tax on rice and increase tax on beer and cigarette by 20 per cent. . . .

Another importer of cigarette and alcohol products Sullivans Limited said they received orders from the government yesterday about the increase in tax on duty.

Gov't to Raise Excise on Beer and Tobacco Products

Intro:

The government is expected to grow the revenue base by raising excise on beer and tobacco products by 20 percent.

The Finance Minister, Snyder Rini in tabling the 2008 budget this morning said that the government is determined to place the country on a firm economic and financial footing.

"Without this there is little hope of improving the living standards for our rural people and communities."

Mr. Rini said in the second reading of the Bill that the increase in excise on the two products is to limit the social and health risks pose by the consumption of the products.

THE Solomon Islands riots have sparked price rises for food and tobacco in the capital Honiara. . . .

A survey by the Solomon Star newspaper found the cost of cigarettes had risen by about 30 per cent at some outlets after the violence.
