Smokers could soon find themselves barred from lighting up in most hotel bedrooms in the UK, according to a survey published here Thursday.

Almost seven-out-of-ten British hoteliers questioned said they expected to ban smoking throughout their premises within the next year. . . .

Campaigners in Britain are keeping a close watch on the Irish Republic which began a smoking ban in public places, including bars and restaurants, last month.

The survey, in the UK trade magazine "Caterer and Hotelkeeper", found 79 percent of hoteliers currently allowing smoking in designated areas.

This is expected to fall to 30 percent within a year.

Smoking ban at health units a farce

Jump to full article: Kuwait Times (kw), 2003-12-04
Author: Abdellatif Sharaa

Intro:

The ban on smoking in health clinics and hospitals doesn't seem to be working very well. The results are so disappointing that many who hoped to have a smoke-free environment are angry that even a decree issued by the Minister of Health Mohammed Al Jarallah has not deterred staff and patients alike from lighting up.

The Ministry of Health has been trying to ban smoking at public health units for over two years, one angry patient at a local hospital said. "Unfortunately if just doesn't seem to work. If doctors and health staff smoke blatantly, how do you ask patients and other visitors to put out their cigarettes?"

It is noted the habit of smoking is common not only among the adults but also among the teenagers in the schools. The primary reason is the parent's carelessness of their children. When they have no control on their children it gives them more freedom to do what they want.

UPDATE 4-UST profit lifted by extra tobacco shipping day

    (Adds details, updates stock activity)
Jump to full article: Reuters, 2003-04-22
    Author: Jessica Wohl

    Intro:

UST Inc. UST.N , the top U.S. maker of moist smokeless tobacco, on Tuesday posted a higher first-quarter profit, boosted by an extra shipping day for its tobacco, and maintained its forecast for the year.

The Greenwich, Connecticut-based company ships tobacco products like Copenhagen only once a week, on Mondays, so an extra shipping day can cause a notable improvement in results.

UST said domestic industry shipments from wholesalers to retailers were weaker in recent weeks as armed forces stationed in the United States, particularly reservists, headed to the Middle East. Members of the military tend to use smokeless tobacco products more than the broad adult population, and the data only track U.S. retail shipments, the company said.

UST said its smokeless tobacco sales to the military jumped 95 percent, or 3.1 million cans, in the first quarter, including 2.2 million cans shipped to Kuwait via emergency airfreight. The president of UST's U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Co. estimated that about 1 percent to 2 percent of its consumer base has been temporarily relocated abroad due to troop movement.

The Army regulates, as it does so many aspects of soldiers' lives, much of what they take into battle. But into the crevices of rucksacks and the slender folds of pockets, U.S. troops who are in Kuwaiti camps today but in the Iraqi desert tomorrow find tiny spaces for something of their own.

They choose carefully. What do you pack when you are being sent out to kill? Or when you might be going out to die?

Spc. John Zellers, 28, of the 2nd Battalion of the 319th Airborne Field Artillery Regiment, carries both cigarettes and a tin of Copenhagen smokeless tobacco, because he's prohibited from firing up a smoke at night when they reach combat. [This graph only]
