Intro: There are currently no plans to ban branded cigarette packages from the island, Guernsey's deputy director of public health has said.
Australia has decided to introduce plain packaging and the UK is due to begin public consultation in the spring into whether to follow suit.
Dr Brian Parkin said any move should only be made after the idea's effectiveness was measured elsewhere.
He said: "We should consider it, but watch and wait and see if it works."
Research in the UK has found a link between "glitzy, branded packaging" and the number of young people taking up the habit.

Intro: Guernsey's Health and Social Services Department is reassuring retailers over the cost of the re-introduction of a tobacco licence.
The licence will require wholesalers and retailers to buy a sales licence, raising concerns about the cost.
But officials say details have yet to be finalised and it may work on a sliding scale based on turnover or even be covered by a tobacco tax.

Intro: Islanders who ditch their cigarette butts - or any kind of litter - will soon face parking ticket style fines.
Cigarette ends and rubbish are causing a mess in places like St Peter Port.
It is a long-awaited move for the workers who clean up the town.
Five years on since the smoking ban and Guernsey health officials will tell you it is already making a difference to islanders' health.
But for States Works staff who work to keep the island clean, the ban has proved a headache, because more people are now dropping butts outside.

Intro: RESIDENTS in Alderney have again spoken out against a smoking ban in enclosed public spaces.
Former States member Lin Maurice (pictured) told last night’s people’s meeting at the Island Hall that a ban was unnecessary and would be unpopular.
She also said the States had failed to consult the public despite two protest marches and numerous petitions.
Mrs Maurice said: ‘People are making it quite clear they do not want a ban, but freedom of choice.
‘A ban is not in Alderney’s interests. Tourism will suffer, pubs will close and people will lose their jobs if a ban is introduced.’
Mrs Maurice added: ‘We’re just bowing to pressure from Guernsey.
‘This is Alderney, not Guernsey. We do things differently here.’
