Ban on public smoking to help preserve environment

Intro:

Angolan Government ban on public smoking will avoid the degradation of the environment and help improve human life quality.

This was said Tuesday in Luanda by the national director of environment management, Vladimir Russo.

Speaking to Angop, Vladimir Russo said the law, approved by the Cabinet Council on July 1, is welcoming as production of tobacco and filters cause several environmental problems, including the degradation of soils and death of sea creatures.

Psychologist calls for strict control of public smoking ban

Intro:

Angolan psychologist, Carlinhos Zassala, Wednesday in Luanda urged the need for a stricter enforcement of the law against public smoking.

Speaking to Angop in reaction of to the approval of the law against public smoking, Carlinhos Zassala said the purposes of the Government will not be attained concerning the use of tobacco in public, unless a stricter control is exerted by concerned organs.

He said public smoking tends to affect more the passive smokers than tobacco users themselves.

Lecturer defends greater media intervention in spreading ban on smoking

The Principal of Lusiadas University of Angola (ULA) Mário Pinto de Andrade, Thursday here has defended, a greater diffusion by the state-owned and private mass media of law against public smoking, approved in July, 1st by the Cabinet Council.

Speaking to Angop, the academic, stated that mass media organs such as Radio, TV, newspaper and others need to hold awareness campaigns countrywide about the law against public smoking, before its enforcement.

Sociologist Paulo de Carvalho on Tuesday here expressed his satisfaction at the approval by the Angolan government of the bill against the usage of tobacco in public areas, considering it a worthy instrument in the fight to the consequences of smoking in human organism.

In an interview to Angop, Paulo de Carvalho said that with such as initiative, the government solves problems of passive smokers, people that are the main victims of usage of tobacco in public locals.

Non compliance with smoking ban implies fines

Intro:

Luanda - The non compliance with the smoking prohibition in public places, which was approved last Wednesday by the Angolan government, will imply fines that vary from 5 to 10 minimum salaries.

This measure covers institutions of central and local administration, hotels, restaurants, airports, night clubs, telephone booths, train stations and public toilets, said to the press the director of the legal department of the Ministry of Public Administration, Employment and Social Security (MAPESS), Jesus Maiato, on the fringes of the meeting of the Cabinet Council.

According to the decree of the government, it will only be allowed to smoke in places where the smoker is alone and therefore he/she will not harm the health of other people.

World No Tobacco Day celebrated today

Intro:

In the light of the date, this year the Angolan Health Ministry (MINSA) appeals to the civil society and NGOs to promote points of view of experts about the importance of health warnings on packs as a means of health protection.

MINSA also calls for promoting the approval of laws protecting non-smokers sites, as well as supervising the attitude of the tobacco industry, concerning deceiving publicity and the use of warnings about the harmful effects to health.

Obtaining from the civil society the commitment that youths should be protected from advertisements and promotion of tobacco, including the curbing of sponsoring activities by the tobacco industry in the country is also part of the Health Ministry's intentions.

For the successful implementation of this goal, the institution in charge of health in Angola counts on the collaboration of main interveners such as teachers, heads of anti-tobacco NGOs, sports associations, schools, universities and opinion makers.

Unified Tobacco Factory Factory to Open Cigarette Production Line

Intro:

Two lines of cigarette production, of the national brand "Ac" and "SL", with the capacity of producing five thousands units per minute, was inaugurated today, in Luanda, in the Unified Tobacco Factory (FTU), an investment by the company "Britsh American Tobacco".

The setting up of the equipments, which took about one year, and the respective training of the Angolan staff, cost the company expenses of about 3 million Dollars.

According to the general Director of the FTU Unified Society (STU) of Angola, Fernando Cantalupo, the current production will permit to provide the national market with about 80 per cent of its production that will allow the country to save foreign currency.

Cockerels, cigarettes, whisky and wine are the offerings visitors must take to the King of Bailundo - if they want an invitation to his royal court.

I joined Sousa Jamba, an Ovimbundu and an Angolan, to pay our respects and we were able to negotiate a good price for two cockerels at Bailundo's main market.

"We should have brought him some tobacco," worries Mr Jamba.

Nearly Four Million Dollars Invested in Cigarettes

At least three million nine hundred and fourty five thousand (3.945.000) dollars were this year spent by the company "Barco Trading Limited", in the construction of a cigarette factory in a Lubango suburb, southern Huila province. The company Director Ricardo Rujujir said the firm has the annual capacity to produce 600 millions of seven different brands of cigarettes, including "yes", "supermatch" and "forum", with the South African label.
