Bans on smoking substantially reduce hospital admissions for heart attacks, research has shown.
On the first anniversary of the ban on public smoking in England, a report shows that smoke-free laws worldwide reduce admissions by almost one fifth (Preventive Medicine 2008 Jun 18; doi: 10.1016/j.ypmed.2008.06.007).
This meta-analysis of published studies shows that the effects were immediate. . . .
The analysis is based on eight studies published since 2004, when the first report of such a drop was reported for the town of Helena, Montana.

The University of Algiers has issued an order forbidding smoking at Youcef Benkhedda faculty, while this order will be extended to all the University institutes and faculties, Algiers University Director, Mr. Tahar Hadjar told El Khabar.
According to the same speaker, the order has been issued after the awareness campaigns on smoking and drugs dangers; the university was used holding in the few last years. “The order banning smoking through Youcef Benkhedda faculty has been released in accordance with the Algerian and international law prohibiting smoking in companies and public places,”
Well informed sources told El Khabar that the international tobacco group British American Tobacco, BAT is closely following the privatization file of the state owned sulphur and tobacco company, SNTA.
Meanwhile, it has started transferring its activities based in Morocco to Algeria in order to back up its position in the local market.
BAT and Lorillard have filed their appeals with the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
