Smoking cessation pharmacotherapy can double quit rates.1 However, smokers often fail after a single quit attempt, and quitting smoking often involves multiple quit attempts over the course of months or years.2-5 Few studies have tested the impact of providing repeated courses of pharmacotherapy to help smokers recover from relapses and engage in new cessation attempts.6-11 As part of a study of chronic disease management for smoking cessation, we followed a cohort of smokers that was offered up to 4 courses of pharmacotherapy over 2 years. We examined their continued interest in using pharmacotherapy and the effect of that treatment.

15,000 smokers die every year in Algeria

Intro:

Smoking kills over 15,000 people in Algeria every year. Some of 7,000 smokers die of heart attack, a specialist in respiratory diseases said Wednesday.

"Smoking causes deadly diseases including heart attacks," said Professor Salim Nafti, president of the Algerian Association of Respiratory Diseases and Tuberculosis.

In a seminar in Boumerdes Province (50 km east of Algeria), Professor Nafti mentioned that 2,000 to 3,000 smokers in Algeria die of lung and throat cancer.

Bans on smoking substantially reduce hospital admissions for heart attacks, research has shown.

On the first anniversary of the ban on public smoking in England, a report shows that smoke-free laws worldwide reduce admissions by almost one fifth (Preventive Medicine 2008 Jun 18; doi: 10.1016/j.ypmed.2008.06.007).

This meta-analysis of published studies shows that the effects were immediate. . . .

The analysis is based on eight studies published since 2004, when the first report of such a drop was reported for the town of Helena, Montana.

The University of Algiers has issued an order forbidding smoking at Youcef Benkhedda faculty, while this order will be extended to all the University institutes and faculties, Algiers University Director, Mr. Tahar Hadjar told El Khabar.

According to the same speaker, the order has been issued after the awareness campaigns on smoking and drugs dangers; the university was used holding in the few last years. “The order banning smoking through Youcef Benkhedda faculty has been released in accordance with the Algerian and international law prohibiting smoking in companies and public places,”

Coast Guards seized, during last September, more than 100 thousands litres of gas, not less than 10 thousands kg and 6 thousands boxes of different food products, as well as 787 boxes of medicines and about 150 heads of livestock that were smuggled across the border in the east and west of the country. In this regard 80 smugglers were arrested during the same period. . . .

The State is losing yearly $162mn as a result of losing control over tobacco counterfeited products, which owners evade taxes imposed by the State, while traders sell normally that counterfeited products or banned trade marks because of loopholes in control due to be undertaken by trade ministry. International specialized institutions, however, estimate the losses resulting in smuggling, fraud and copycat at $500mn a year, worldwide. In this respect, an official in anti-smuggling direction at customs services Mr. Nadir Redouane told El Khabar that customs managed to confiscate 100 thousand cartons of smuggled and counterfeited cigarettes especially those US trade marks at the southern borders during 2007 first five months of coming mainly from Mali and Niger.

New South Wales Premier Morris Iemma says he cannot understand concerns about Government money being invested in a tobacco company.

NSW Treasury has bought a stake in the owner of Phillip Morris, which makes a number of high-selling cigarette brands.

The head of the Cancer Council, Dr Andrew Penman, says it the Government is hypocritical to convey strong anti-smoking messages at the same time it is profiting from shares.

The Opposition's health spokeswoman, Jillian Skinner, also says it is unacceptable for Mr Iemma to try and defend the investment. . . .

"Where do you stop? The next target then are the coal mines? Oil companies or other investments? " he said.

"This is arm's length from Government, these are decisions made by fund managers."

Schooling Children Aware of Tobacco Addiction Danger

Intro:

Pupils of the secondary and high education in Constantine are "very aware" of tobacco addiction danger on public health and on the ability to assimilate, according to a survey made by the epidemiology and prevention service of Constantine's teaching hospital.

This survey on tobacco addiction in the school milieu which concerned 1,238 pupils whose 57.2 % girls and 42.8 % boys, highlighted many indications showing the spread of tobacco addiction in the school milieu and the increasing number of girls who occasionally smoke and whose number reach 56,5 %.

Other indications also revealed by the investigation are nevertheless positive, since they show that 78.6 % of pupils wish to stop smoking.

Lm20 million worth of contraband cigarettes seized

The largest haul of smuggled cigarettes ever discovered in Malta was seized by the Customs department yesterday. Approximately 25 million cigarettes, worth about Lm20 million and believed to be bogus, were discovered at the Freeport Terminal in Malta as they were being shipped to Algeria from Asia.
