Albanians buy safety from Serbs with cigarettes

Intro:

Albanian villagers living near the border with Serbia are paying Yugoslav army reservists in cigarettes to let them work their land without being shot at, an newspaper said on Thursday.

An elder of Shishtavec village told daily Koha Jone local farmers were afraid to work their fields or gather fodder for their livestock because of the threat posed by Serb snipers.

``The reservists asked the villagers to give them cigarettes if they wanted to work their land close to the border and cut grass from the meadows,'' Dylejman Nela was quoted as saying.

The tobacco factory, like so much of Albania's industrial production, had fallen victim to the country's opening to the West 10 years ago. Who would buy Albanian cigarettes when they could smoke Marlboros instead? The countryside is dotted with these derelict buildings. The town of Shkoder, though, could find nowhere else to house the Kosovars who keep arriving in such numbers.
