And to help anxious smokers prepare for the in-flight duress, it will arrange modestly priced appointments (about $30) with a "physician specializing in smokers' disorders" in Paris every Saturday starting this week.

  • 03/14/97 American Airlines to go Smokefree July 1 "American Airlines is eliminating smoking from the rest of its flights . . . becoming completely smoke-free. As of July 1, American flights to and from Latin America, Japan and some markets in Mexico will become smoke-free."
  • 03/12/97 United Airlines will go completely smokeless, including flights to Asia, as of July 1, 1997. United currently bans smoking on flights across the Atlantic and within Europe (except between Washington Dulles International Airport and Milan, Italy). United also bans smoking on trans-Pacific flights and those within Asia except certain flights to Tokyo.

    Airlines Flying 100% Smokefree:

    (All flights between Canada, Australia and the US are 100% smokefree by treaty.)

    Airlines with some smoke-free international flights:

    • Japan Airlines All international flights have been smokefree since April 1, 1999
    • Air France
        A complete ban begins Nov. 1.     • On March 29, 1998 Air France will ban smoking on all trans-Atlantic flights. It's also eliminating smoking on flights between Los Angeles and Tahiti. (The only Air France flights from the United States with smoking sections will fly from Miami to the Caribbean.)

    • Concorde has a smoking section
  • Austrian Airlines will ban smoking on transatlantic flights April 1, 1997.
  • Finnair flights to and from the US are 100% smokefree
  • KLM bans smoking on transatlantic flights.
  • Luftansa bans smoking on transatlantic, intra-European flights; allows smoking on some Asian flights.
  • Royal Air Maroc has banned smoking on all transatlantic flights as of September 1. In 1997, Royal Air Maroc banned smoking on its domestic flights and on most of its flights within Europe.
  • Sabena will ban smoking on transatlantic flights April 1, 1997
  • SpanairThe only flights where smoking is allowed is between Spain and the South American cities of Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, and Sao Paulo and between Spain and Cuba. 11/7/99
  • SwissAir will ban smoking on transatlantic flights April 1, 1997
  • TWA bans smoking on all flights to France, Germany and the UK.
  • Northwest bans smoking on transatlantic flights; allows smoking on 80% of flights to Asia. No smoking in first class.
  • 03/12/97 United Airlines will go completely smokeless, including flights to Asia, as of July 1, 1997.
    United banned smoking on flights across the Atlantic and within Europe except between Washington Dulles International Airport and Milan, Italy on June 1, 1996. United also banned smoking on trans-Pacific flights and those within Asia except certain flights to Tokyo.
  • CAAC (Civil Aviation Authority of China) bans smoking on domestic flights and some short international flights. For safety reasons, CAAC plans to extend a limited smoking ban to all international flights, due to at least one airline crash attributed to passenger smoking

    Airlines Flying Internationally with smoking sections:

    • According to Travel Weekly the following airlines have smoking sections on all international flights: Aeroflot, Aerolineas Argentinas, Aeromexico, Air India, Alitalia, All Nippon Airways, CAAC (China), El Al, South African Airways, Swissair, Tower Air.
    • The Concorde allows smoking on all its flights.
