On the American Cancer Society's "Humanitarian Award" & Willie Brown

I wanted to give you a little follow up on the ACS actions. I have calling and faxing the local and regional offices to let them know how I feel. I would encourage others to do the same:

This is a day of shame for the ACS. Apparently due to Real Politic, they have decided to "mend fences" and "look to the future instead of the past" to honor Willie Brown as Humanitarian of the Year.

PROTEST AGAINST THIS ACT OF INSANITY!!! THE ACS CANNOT PROCEED WITHOUT YOUR SUPPORT.

We should all be aware of what Willie Brown has done over his political career:

  • He has received more than $750,000 in Tobacco Inc money. That is more than ANY OTHER POLITICIAN IN AMERICA, more than even Jessie Helms.
  • He was responsible for developing the strategy of legislation (SB 376) which became Proposition 188, the most unethical, deceptive and anti-democratic attack on smoking restrictions in the state of Calfornia. The ACS needed to spend $2 Million to defeat it. What other uses could the ACS found for these funds?
  • He engineered tort reform in 1987 to give the tobacco industry immunity from product liability laws.
  • His entire carreer in Sacramento represented the most pro-Tobacco behavior of any politician in the history of the California legislature.

But all of us should be ready to offer forgiveness, even to Willie Brown. Right?

Well, here are a few questions you may ask if you are ready to forgive what Willie Brown has done to cause death and destruction as a result of tobbaco:

Willie Brown has denied that the $750,000 he has received from Tobacco Inc has had any influence on his actions as a politician. HAS HE RECANTED AND ADMITTED HIS WRONGFUL ACTIONS??

Willie Brown has not taken responsibility for his part in bringing about Prop 188. HAS HE ADMITTED HIS ROLE IN THIS?? What about the $2 Million wasted to defeat it?

If you are ready to give him forgiveness for his long history of pro-Tobacco actions, DO YOU REALLY WANT TO HONOR HIM AS HUMANITARIAN OF THE YEAR??
