Josh Greer, president of Digital Planet, an interactive marketing firm, says that his company was approached by an Asian tobacco conglomerate and several US tobacco companies to build community-based Web sites for smokers. The New Republic's cover story, Freedom's Smoke features an industry-sympathetic multi-tobacco-book review by Malcolm Gladwell. After reading "Smokescreen," "Ashes to Ashes," and, uh, "The Runaway Jury," and after taking Viscusi's dismissal of ETS risks at face value, Gladwell agrees with Kluger's proposal to settle with the industry: . . . addiction is a disease. . . Diseases are not criminal enterprises. They demand treatment, not protection.
