  • 00/05/24 The Tobacco Free Periodicals Project
      A simple project by Med Chi, the Maryland State Medical Society in 1996: A resolution was adopted, and a letter sent to every managed care organization and hospital in the state - asking them to establish a policy against the display of magazines that contain tobacco ads. The letters in response (and a new policy by Prudential Healthcare) indicate this one-time effort was worthwhile and that follow-up efforts may yield a significant payoff. This could potentially echo the earlier development in which health care institutions stopped selling tobacco in their gift shops.

  • As of the Sept., 1999 issue, PETERSEN'S HUNTING now takes tobacco ads--and lots of them: Basic, Marlboro, Merit, Copenhagen
    This is an abrupt departure from their previous no-tobacco ads policy.

  • Honolulu Star-Bulletin [POLICY CHANGE? On February 17, 2002, HSB carried a full-page cigarette ad.--gb]
  • San Jose (CA) Mercury-News (CA) (as of July 1, 1999) Knight-Ridder, which owns SJMN, allows its papers to set their own policies.
  • Salina (KS) Journal. As of May, 1999, Editor Tom Bell reversed his recent decision to lift the paper's 14-year ban on tobacco ads.
  • Anchorage (AL) Daily News stopped accepting most tobacco advertisements, except in the pre-printed Parade magazine, as of August 1, 1999. An edition of Parade free of tobacco advertisements will begin circulating with the newspaper as of Jan. 1, 2000.
