They have contracted with tobacco companies all over Canada. The contract is worth millions to them. Just multiply each bus shelter ad in Canada by $1,000 per month. In our town, there are 24 bus shelters with tobacco ads, and they each have two panels, are back lit, and welcome smokers to relax while waiting for the bus.

It will cost you some money to call Montreal. Ask them to send you a copy of their annual report, and then count the number of women on the board of directors, or officers. Then you decide where you want to fill your next prescription, do your banking, and what kind of candy to eat.
The Canadian Tobacco Manufacturers' Council says they will not put ads anywhere within 200 metres of a primary or secondary school.
Check with your local school principal, the board of education, and demand that they protest the exposure of their children to tobacco advertising.
Visit or call your local MP, and MPP's office to protest this violation!
Call to Action
National Organization of People Attacking Tobacco Sales to Youth
6 March 96
The GOULD OUTDOOR ADVERTISING PEOPLE and the TOBACCO COMPANIES have plastered bus shelters near schools in Kitchener and Waterloo. Here are some locations:
King and William
King and Allen
Weber south of Union
Also on Weber and Bridgeport area near YMCA
We need an accounting of the other 20 bus shelters in our area. We want pictures of them all, and their locations, and the closest school to the shelter. Take pictures with people inside the shelter, especially if they are kids smoking.
I have photos of underage persons smoking in the bus shelter on February 24th at the one on Weber near the YMCA. It astounds me that no one from the media has been out and about town looking at King St. I wonder if CKCO uses that street on its way to cover Waterloo City Council, and the Brian Turnbull affair. If so, they would have had to pass both of those locations, one of them is a block from the health department.
We are calling for a complete ban on bus shelter, and other ads, not only near schools, we want a complete ban. The buses have been used before to promote racing, jazz, and fireworks. It is about time that our cities' managers stop tobacco payola.
We will be setting up a protest that will knock the wind from those who would kill our kids with advertising. We want action to be taken by someone in a responsible position in our community.
Send your photos to my office at 105 University Ave. E., Waterloo, Ont. N2J 2W1 Videos would be nice to show to Regional Council on 3 April. Please call me at my office to tell me what you have to donate to the cause. Call 519-725-2273 or 2263.
We have to work together to do something in our community to stop the plague of tobacco promotion. The tobacco industry, their advertisers, their sales representatives care nothing for the average Canadian child, except of course how much money they can make from the misery created from selling cigarettes to our kids.
Let's give them some misery for a change. Take them on for our children's sake.
