The New School for Social Research Presents a Conference on a Key Issue for our Times

Hosted by Marshall Blonsky, Wolfson Center Fellow, author of "American Mythologies and Alan Brody, President of TECHmarketing, author of "Cigarette Seduction"

Distinguished panelists:

  • C. Everett Koop, former U.S. Surgeon General
  • Susan Koniak, Visiting Professor of Law, Cornell University
  • Michael Eriksen, Director, Office on Smoking and Health, Centers for Disease Control
  • Richard Klein, Cornell University, author of "Cigarettes are Sublime"

Tobacco has always been a troubling paradox. When first popularized, cigarettes were touted as a health benefit. Challenged by public opinion, their sales increased. When the industry was restricted from certain media, its ads just got better. While dangers of smoking were conveyed to teens, the number of starters increased.

Why has the cigarette maintained its status in American culture? What enables the tobacco industry to survive the attack?

This colloquium is an attempt to understand the cultural and economic forces arrayed on either side of the great smoking debate as the country moves toward the "Great American Tobacco Settlement" while considering the growing movement in states like California to ban smoking in public places including bars.

    Among the presentations:

  • Marshall Blonsky and Michael Eriksen will give a rapid introduction to branding as it is manifested in selected cigarette brands today.
  • In "Semiotics of the Settlement," Susan Koniak will deconstruct the text of the June 20, 1997 Tobacco Settlement proposal.
